What makes it a social enterprise?
As a non for profit social enterprise, engageSPARK reinvests the entirety of their profit back into their business. They subsidize the cost of using their platform to NGOs, government and other social enterprises. Because of the prevalence of basic mobile phone even among those living in poverty, this allows organizations to easily reach beneficiaries of their services in ways that would not be possible otherwise.
While they do offer their services internationally, they have also focused some of their efforts to help organizations involved locally in the Philippines during the last typhoons Haiyan (Yolanda) and Hagupit (Rubi). For Typhoon Haiyan, the platform was used for a program by Mercy Corps to offer financial literacy by SMS and voice messages to 20,000 recipients of relief funds following the disaster. For Typhoon Hagupit, they also collaborated with Mercy Corps to reach out to residents of the regions at risk to alert them and help them prepare before the arrival of the Typhoon.
